Google is paying some sites when AI answers use their content

An invitation only pilot inside Search Console pays for contribution rather than clicks. Here is what has been confirmed, and what nobody has told us yet.

Short answer: Google is running an invitation only pilot, reported in September 2026, that pays selected sites when their content contributes significantly to answers in AI Overviews, AI Mode and the Gemini app. Payments appear as monthly earnings in a Search Console panel. Google has not published the rates, the eligibility rules or the method it uses to measure contribution.

What the pilot is

For two years the standard complaint about AI answers has been simple. The model reads your page, answers the question, and the reader never arrives. Google has now started testing a response to that complaint, and it is more interesting than another attribution link.

The programme is called the AI contribution pilot. It lives inside Search Console as a panel showing monthly earnings, it is invitation only, and it covers AI Overviews, AI Mode and the Gemini app. It was reported publicly in mid September 2026, and Google has described it as an early stage learning pilot rather than a finished product.

The payment condition is the part worth reading twice. Money accrues when your content contributes significantly while the answer is being generated. Links or fact checks that happen after the answer has been produced do not qualify. In other words, Google is paying for the material it used to think with, not for the citation it printed underneath.

What is known and what is not

Most coverage of this pilot blurs the line between reporting and speculation. Here is the split, kept honest.

QuestionStatus
Does the pilot existConfirmed. Reported in September 2026 and described by Google as an early pilot
Which products it coversConfirmed. AI Overviews, AI Mode and the Gemini app
Where you see itConfirmed. A panel inside Search Console showing monthly earnings
Who can joinInvitation only. Dozens of sites approached, beyond news publishers, reportedly with interest from small and mid sized sites
What triggers paymentContent that contributes significantly during answer generation. Post answer links and fact checks do not count
How much it paysNot published. Early payouts have been described by one participant as small next to ad revenue
How contribution is measuredNot published. The panel shows earnings without a calculation method
Whether it becomes permanentUnknown. It is a pilot, and pilots get cancelled

Anyone selling you a strategy to maximise your AI contribution earnings is selling a guess. Nobody outside Google knows the formula, and the programme is too young to have produced reliable patterns.

Contribution is not a citation, and not a click

This distinction decides what you should do about it. A citation is a link shown under an answer. A click is a person arriving on your site. Contribution is neither. It is a measure of how much your content shaped the answer as it was written.

That means a page can contribute without ever being visible to the reader. It also means the page that wins is not necessarily the one with the best headline or the strongest call to action. It is the page that supplied the facts the model needed while forming a response.

Look at what that rewards. Specific numbers, dated statements, clear definitions, tables that resolve a comparison, procedures written in order. Those are the parts of a page a model leans on while building an answer. Opinion, brand voice and persuasion carry almost none of that weight.

How to make a page contribution shaped

You cannot apply to this pilot, so the only sensible preparation is to make your pages the kind that would earn from it, which happens to be the same work that earns citations everywhere else.

  1. Answer in the first two sentencesPut a complete, self contained answer at the top of each section. A model that has to assemble your answer from five paragraphs will usually take someone else's.
  2. Carry facts other pages do not haveOriginal measurements, prices, dates, test results and first hand experience are the parts that get used. Content assembled from other articles contributes nothing new by definition.
  3. Date everything honestlySay when a fact was true and update it when it changes. Answers about the present prefer sources that state a date.
  4. Make structure machine readableOne clear H1, descriptive H2s that match real questions, tables for comparisons, and schema that matches what visitors actually see.
  5. Stay reachableNone of this matters if crawlers cannot read the page. That includes the network layer, which now blocks some AI agents by default on many sites, as we covered in the Cloudflare defaults change.

How to measure your own contribution today

You cannot see contribution unless you are in the pilot, but you can measure the signals underneath it, and those tell you most of what you need.

Start with crawl evidence. Your access log shows every time Google fetched a page, and in the same window it shows which pages the AI agents of other engines opened. Pages that get fetched repeatedly by several engines are the pages doing the work.

Then measure readiness per page rather than per site. Our free AI SEO audit scores a URL on the signals that decide whether an engine can read, trust and quote it, from crawler access through structured data to answer capsules. A page that fails those checks will not contribute to anything, paid or unpaid.

Finally, watch the gap between how often engines read you and how often they send anyone back. We published our own numbers for that in 14 days of server logs, and the gap is wide enough to explain why a payment programme exists at all.

What to do if you are not invited

Almost nobody is. Treat the pilot as a signal rather than a revenue plan. The signal is that Google now accepts, in public and in money, that content used inside an AI answer has value even when the reader never clicks.

That acceptance will outlive this particular pilot. Whether the mechanism ends up as direct payment, a licensing market, or something negotiated by the large publisher groups, the sites that benefit will be the ones whose pages are demonstrably the source of the facts. That is the asset worth building now, and it is worth building whether or not a payment ever arrives.

The bottom line

A real programme exists, it pays for contribution rather than clicks, and the details that would let you optimise for it have not been published. Ignore anyone claiming otherwise, keep publishing pages that carry facts nobody else has, and make sure every AI agent can actually reach them.

No. It is an early pilot with undisclosed rates, so it is not a revenue plan. Treat it as evidence that content used inside AI answers is being valued, and keep optimising for clicks as well.
You cannot see contribution directly unless you are in the pilot. You can watch which pages AI agents fetch repeatedly in your server logs, and check whether each page is readable and quotable with an AI SEO audit.
Unknown. Google describes it as a learning pilot, and pilots can be changed or cancelled. Nothing about its current shape should be treated as permanent.
